AJ {Cake Smash} – Chicago Illinois Baby Photographer

I have had a TON of baby girls in front of my lens so you can imagine I always have a great time with little AJ when he arrives to be photographed!  Myrna and TJ were so excited when they found out they were having AJ and just knew they had to capture his every moment.  AJ’s cake smash session in January (a few months earlier than his birthday, but he just couldn’t wait for cake!) was the 4th in our sessions together since Myrna’s first maternity shoot.  We had such a great time!

AJ was ALL BOY with that cake.  He was completely messy – whipping little bits of cake around the place (see Photo 4 below!) – and having a grand old time.  You can see more photos in his Facebook album.

Thanks, B Family, for allowing me to be a part of such a wonderful 18 months!!  I know little AJ makes you happy every single day and I can’t wait to keep capturing him as he grows up.

Sammy {Cake Smash} – Chicago Illinois Baby Photographer

Back in December, I decided to start photographing 1st Birthday Cake Smash sessions!!  They are totally adorable and I couldn’t help but jump into it.  Plus, I get to eat the “clean part” of the smash cake when we’re all done.

I asked Sandra if her daughter would be my first cake smasher and Sammy was perfect for the gig!  She loved the frosting, dipping her head into the cake and looking up at us obviously thinking “can I keep doing this, for real?!”  We did start the session with some clean shots – this particular one began with twinkle lights since it was around the holidays.

Sandra, Cliff and Sammy are now far away in Los Angeles, CA as a result of a fantastic new role Cliff received at work.  We will miss them greatly here in Chicago, but there will always be the memories and welcome arms when they return.

Check out Sammy’s gallery on Facebook here!

Tutorial {Cropping}

I thought I’d try something new on the blog today and post a quick tutorial image.  One of the pieces I’m working on tonight for my new branding arsenal is a Print Release info card.  One of the panels has a reminder about cropping.  I created this handy dandy guide to illustrate just how much of a photo can potentially be sliced off when printing at different sizes.

Have you ever ordered a photo only to find your baby’s head partially cropped off?  What if I let the printer decide where to crop in the above photo?  Little Sammy’s booty might be removed – and that’s the best part!

When you understand the relationship between what your camera records and what size you decide to print at, you’ll always go into your print order knowing what you’re getting.  In fact, I HIGHLY recommend cropping your images before you upload for ordering.

If you’re interested in a great solution for this, check out Memory Manager 3.0 on my personal Creative Memories website here!  You can easily crop images to whatever size you plan to print it at, create virtual copies so you always have the original and edit photos to your heart’s desire – you can even clone out unwanted details!  It’s a pretty cool program for those who like to keep it simple.

I hope many of you find this helpful.  If you do – I just may have to start a frequent photo tips & tricks campaign!
